Inside Passage Ports

The Inside Passage is the network of channels and islands running up the Southeast Alaska panhandle, and nearly every Alaska cruise spends most of its port days here. None of the towns are connected to each other by road, which keeps them compact and close to the water. Each has a different character, from Tlingit culture and totem parks to Russian colonial history and gold rush storefronts.

Inside Passage — FAQ

Which Inside Passage port is best for glaciers?

Juneau, where Mendenhall Glacier is a short drive from the docks and helicopter tours land on the Juneau Icefield. Skagway and Haines also offer glacier flightseeing over the nearby mountains.

Can I explore these towns without a tour?

Yes. In Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Haines the downtown areas are within walking distance of the cruise docks. Glaciers, wildlife areas and the backcountry generally need a tour or a boat.
